Hello from our New Owner, Ally!

Hello friends! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving spent with family and friends. If you don’t know already, my name is Ally and I am the new owner here at For Goodness Sake. Valley Bennett, my dear friend, handed me the keys to the store a little over a month ago. Time really flies! I wanted to use this platform as a way to introduce myself, how I came to be the owner at FGS, and why this little store is really special.

I was a customer first, of course. It was 2012, I was 20 years old, on a…sabbatical from college we’ll call it…working at a local pizza joint, and trying to figure things out. I would pop in to FGS before my shift for a kombucha when it was at its old location (now Crooked Run Brewery) and I remember feeling a sense of relief when I walked through the doors…maybe even a sense of magic. Shortly after FGS moved to its current location, I applied for a job! I remember my job interview with Valley…we met at the Purcellville Community Center and took a walk. We talked about the store, who we were, and why I wanted to work at For Goodness Sake. I think my answer was somewhere along the lines of “I’m really in to health and wellness!”. Though this answer was honest, the full truth is that I was desperately looking for something to bring light back in to my life. I was suffering from an eating disorder and depression, and to me, the store seemed like a solution. In reality it wasn’t, BUT my job at FGS put me on the path to my recovery. I learned all about natural healing, why gut health is important, why organic dairy is better than conventional, why fat is actually GOOD for you, and so much more. What I didn’t realize at the time was that the greatest gift I was receiving wasn’t knowledge of our products. The real gift was the life-long friendships I’ve made with the people I worked with who continue to shape my life today. This was that light I was looking for.

To make this long story much shorter, I went back to college and worked at the store during my holiday breaks. Once I graduated, I came back and worked full-time for Valley for about a year before I moved to Washington DC to put that degree to work 😉 I spent three wonderful years in DC working in development for an amazing non-profit called Bread for the City (seriously check them out, they do powerful work). The knowledge and experience I gained with Bread for the City was immeasurable and I will be forever grateful for my time there.

It was last summer while I was helping out on a Saturday when Valley mentioned an urge for a new adventure and thoughts of selling the store started to come to surface. Without missing a beat, I said “what if I bought it?” So a year later, I quit my job, moved home, and we began the acquisition process. Then on October 27th, I was officially the new owner of For Goodness Sake Natural Food.

This store is special. Not only to me but to those who work here and who shop here. We are a place people can come to for answers, comfort, relief, and community. My vision for the store revolves around this incredible community. My plan is to nurture, support, and educate our community more than ever before. I want FGS to be on your path to health and healing like it was on mine. I want FGS to support you wherever you are on your journey, like it supported me. I want FGS to uplift you in times where you feel down, like it lifted me up. I want FGS to inspire and empower you that you have the power to live a full, happy and healthy life just as it empowered and inspired me. We are your community store and we are here to guide and care for you.

I am so excited for what is to come at FGS and for all of our exciting offerings coming in the new year. Thank YOU for your continued support and for inspiring us to grow.

All my love,

Ally Blaine
